Spring Thaw 2009

The Almosta Blog Posted on April 18, 2009 by MyriamSeptember 16, 2018

Finally completed a special section where you can view the pictures I took of our revived creek. Just follow this link.

You might also have noticed a new block titled Special Pages on the right hand side. As new entries are added in our blog, this post will eventually disappear from the main page. I created the Special Pages block so you can always find the gallery easily. As new galleries are created in the future, I will add a link to them in that block. But don’t worry, you don’t need to keep an eye on it as I will always post an entry to let you know of any additions in that block.

Spring Creek

The Almosta Blog Posted on April 13, 2009 by MyriamSeptember 16, 2018

Went outside early to take some pictures of our creek. There used to be a creek running through the pasture but it ran dry many years ago. However, with the spring thaw and the huge amounts of snow we received, the creek has come back to life.

I also got lucky and took this picture of the horses in the fog.

Porta-potty

The Almosta Blog Posted on April 12, 2009 by MyriamSeptember 16, 2018

After surviving really cold temperatures (see our post titled “Cold Weather“), the cess pool in our septic tank system froze and now the tank is full. We discovered this while doing laundry when water backed up in the basement. Thankfully we were down there doing some work so we were able to move stuff quickly and we didn’t lose anything. Unfortunately, now it means that there’s absolutely no water that can be sent down the pipes until all the snow melts and the ground dries enough for the sanitary company to drive their truck in our backyard and pump the septic tank.

Solutions:
1. Plug the bathtub when taking a shower. When done, set up the sump pump and pump the water out the window.
2. Do dishes in a tub, rinse in a second tub. When tubs are too full, throw contents outside.
3. Rent a porta-potty for… well, you know what their purpose is

It sure makes life interesting!

Woodworking

The Almosta Blog Posted on April 5, 2009 by MyriamSeptember 16, 2018

Yesterday, I completed my first woodworking project. It’s a tool rack for my leather stamping tools. Ok, the wood pieces are not of the best quality (they’re leftovers from other projects) but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Building it was fun but the neatest part was the finishing. Sanding it smooth, staining and varnishing were a lot of fun!
