More snow…

After a couple of weeks of warmer weather during which a lot of snow melted, we were hit with another blizzard on Tuesday. It snowed and the wind blew all day long. We also had some freezing rain so the roads are to be avoided to say the least (and that’s without counting the fact that some roads are flooded). Hopefully, it’s the last snowstorm before next winter.

For those of you wondering how the floods are affecting us, don’t worry. We’re far from the Missouri River and we’re on higher grounds, so we’re safe.

This first picture was taken on Monday, March 23, and shows how much of the snow had melted.

This one shows what the blizzard looked like at our place on Tuesday. Everything is white again.

Long-tailed weasel

Spring is definitely around the corner. With the warmer weather, we’re seeing an increase in wildlife variety. The pheasants have reappeared in the area, we know there are at least two great horned owls on our place, we also spotted three Northern harriers and some robins. But topping them all is the long-tailed weasel we saw this morning. These little critters don’t stay in the same spot for very long so I consider myself very lucky to have gotten some pictures.

Frozen grouse

A week ago, we found a frozen sharp-tailed grouse on our property. Upon inspection, we saw it was injured because we could see some bones on the underside of its left wing but there was no blood. We could also see its skin on that side but once again, no blood. My guess is that it might have gotten hit by a vehicle on the highway and somehow made it to our place where it died of frostbite.

Home vet work

Rascal cut his foot just below the coronary band the other day. With the wet conditions we’re having, his wound wasn’t staying dry enough. So, Myriam and I got our med kit out and proceeded to treat his wound. Some cleaning, antibiotics, vet wrap and water proof duct tape.

I think she did a pretty good job. Better than I did the first time. Her’s stayed on all day where mine came loose within a couple of hours.

First “hunt”

Myriam made her first kill. We were walking back from the mailbox. I had taken the .44-40 with us in case we spotted a coyote or the mountain lion that’s been seen around here.

Well, we didn’t come across such big game, but Myriam did spot a field mouse. So, what the heck, let’s see what she can do with the rifle. Barely missed with the first shot but got him with the second. Not much left of him as you can see.

First time she nailed anything other than cans and paper. She was pretty cool and collected. Usually, a person gets nervous with a live target. We’ll see how she does with something bigger as the opportunity arises.
